Today was all about robots. My daughter, who is 4 years old, said that she wanted to build a robot. Not only did she want a robot, she wanted to build a robot that would “clean the whole world”. Up for the challenge?….Always.

Now, I am all about using things around the home to complete DIY’s. When it comes to kids crafts, I find it amazing (and sometimes humorous) to allow kids to problem solve and use their imaginations to complete tasks. We had a good time building this robot. My daughter really felt like she was doing her part to aid in the world of “clean”, with this project.

Here’s what we used:

  • 3 different sized boxes (diaper boxes, old cereal boxes…….put those Amazon boxes to use)
  • scissors
  • old gift wrapping paper (that we turned inside out because we didn’t want a “snowflake robot”). You could also use aluminum foil.
  • glue (we used a glue gun)
  • tape
  • toilet paper insert (cut into 2 pieces for the knobs on both sides of the head)
  • pool noodle (cut in half and down the middle) for the arms
  • embellishments for the eyes (we had some googly eyes left over from another project)
  • embellishments for the nose (we used one half of a plastic Easter egg we had left over)
  • embellishments for hair (we used crepe streamers left over from a birthday party)
  • embellishments for…whatever (we had leftover scrapbooking stickers, as well as buttons that we used to decorate the robot’s body)

We used 3 different sized boxes and wrapped them in the gift wrap. We stacked the boxes on top of one another, using hot glue to keep them in place. The glue gun came in handy for the majority of this activity. We used hot glue to attach the pool noodle arms. The next steps were a breeze, in terms of adding the “flare”. I allowed my daughter to pick out what she wanted to use as embellishments. Once chosen, we simply glued them on.

Now, this robot can’t exactly clean house, but he’s pretty cool. We named him “Bot Bot”. My daughter had a lot of fun. I could see the “wheels turning” as we were trying to come up with ideas. In the midst of a pandemic, having limitations on where we can go, fostering an imagination is more important than ever.
