The Secret to keeping kids ENGAGED: THE MUST HAVE GUIDE TO TOY ROTATION and storage

One of the most simple and best ways I have found to keep kids engaged for longer periods of time, is implementing toy rotation. As a mom, pediatric therapist, kids ministry leader, and everyone’s favorite auntie, I have developed a hefty tool box of tips and tricks to keeping kids engaged while learning and developing critical skills. So what exactly is toy rotation?

Instead of giving your child access to every toy they possess, toy rotation invloves setting aside a small curated selection of toys that are swapped out every one to two weeks (or even monthly).

1. Reduces Clutter and Overstimulation:

An abundance of toys can make it difficult for a child to focus. A lack of focus can create a barrier to skill development, such as problem solving and creativity. Reducing the number of toys can bring a sense of calm to the play space, increasing focus and attention.

2. Encourages Creativity:

Reducing the number of toys, fosters imaginitive play. Children are less likely to rely on pre-defined play patterns when they are presented with a limited selection. They develop the ability to transform objects into imaginitive scenarios.

3. Teaches Responsibility & Appreciation:

Being presented with too many toys may indirectly create an attitude of devaluing. When children have access to a limited number of toys, they may innately feel a greater appreciation and deisre to care for them.

4. Prolongs Interest in Toys:

This may just be my favorite benefit. Toy rotation brings about a new level of excitement. The toys seem new and there’s often a greater appreciation for them compared to the last time they were played with. The best part is, this can be a huge money saver. If you rotate on a consistent schedule, the excitement of existing toys will last, decreasing the felt need to buy more for entertainment. In addition, the child’s attention is likely sustained for longer periods.

5. Supports Cognitive & Emotional Development:

Toy rotation introduces delayed gratification, which can help build patience and improve emotional regulation skills.

1. Sort & Declutter:

Categorize toys. Donate or toss broken and unused toys, making space for desired toys.

2. Create Toy Categories:

Group toys by type (puzzles, blocks, figurines, cars, stuffed animals, crafts). Make sure to have a balanced mix of options during each rotation.

3. Separate toys into bins/storage containers:

Label them clearly for easy identification.

4. Establish a rotation schedule:
